RECENTLY appointed Monaro Panthers technical director and head coach Njegosh Popovich has called for the club to take a new direction this year.
The Panthers endured a dismal campaign on the pitch in 2011, winning just four of their 16 games before missing out on the finals for a second straight year.
Popovich’s appointment has come as part of a major shake-up of the club’s coaching ranks which has resulted in the departures of former head coach John Bull and assistant Graeme Plath.
As well as taking on the duties of the newly created technical director role, Popovich will co-coach the Panthers first grade side next season alongside former Gungahlin Juventus mentor Frank Cachia.
In further 2012 coaching changes at the Panthers, former Narrabundah head coach Simon Wells will take charge of the club’s Pathway side while Eddie Senatore has been appointed as under-18s coach.
A former Canberra Cosmos representative, Popovich played at the Panthers from 1988-1990 during the club’s heyday competing in the NSW State League.
The 43-year-old said his ambition to help return the club to its former glory was the driving force in taking on his new roles.
“After speaking to the president [Mauro Davanzo] and people around the place I believe the club lacked direction,” he said. “I want to help get it back to where it was 20 years ago.
“At this stage it’s about building a competitive club with some future prospects that people in Queanbeyan and the ACT want to play for.
“At the end of the day the club has got a new direction with a greater focus on development and that was what the committee felt was the best way forward.”
Having represented the Cosmos in the 1995/96 season, Popovich’s accomplished record as a player also includes three ACT Premier League titles with Canberra Olympic.
Next season however, will mark his first foray into the senior coaching ranks.
“I’ve been lucky enough to play under some of the best coaches in Australia and I feel I can bring something to the club from that experience,” Popovich said. "Nothing is going to happen overnight.
"It will take a few years to fully reap the benefits of the new program but hopefully I can put things in place other people can take over and build on.’’ |
