Welcome to another exciting year with Monaro Panthers (Junior) Football Club. No sport in the world evokes greater passion among its followers than Football (soccer). Unfortunately such extremes of emotion are not always conducive to learning the game and junior players can often be discouraged by coaches and parents who place too much pressure on their young shoulders. The priority for anybody teaching children to play football is to create a learning environment that is not too intense and which enables players to develop at their own rate.
Coaches who shout in an aggressive manner, continually repeat instructions and persist with over complicated drills will invariably only succeed in alienating their players. Like any good teacher, the football coach should aim to make each exercise appear new and fresh, thereby building on a child's enthusiasm for the game.
As Director of Coaching I (Tilly) will be attending selected training sessions with the intention of providing on the spot coaching for coaches during this time. This will help determine the best training techniques for the relevant age groups.
My main aim is for our young players to learn and improve on basic skills. It is the fundamental arts of ball control, passing and heading that dominate the average junior soccer match, rather than the more sophisticated skills. A child who has mastered the basics will be an asset to any team.
Once again, thank you to all of our volunteer coaches, your time and efforts are greatly appreciated by all involved within the Club. We hope you all have an enjoyable and successful 2007 season.
